Rising Star Charlie Eisenbies on the Challenges of College Athlete Accident Insurance and How He Keeps His Clients Covered : Risk & Insurance

Charlie Eisenbies knows the end goal for his education clients is always to continue to cover student-athletes as best as possible now and in the future.

Come see the Stars! As part of our ongoing coverage of the best brokers in the commercial insurance space, Risk & Insurance®, with the sponsorship of Philadelphia Insurance, is expanding its coverage of the Rising Stars, those brokers who represent the next wave of insurance brokering talent.

Look for these expanded profiles on the Risk & Insurance website and in your social media feeds throughout the year.

Charlie Eisenbies, vice president, Gallagher, and a 2024 Education Power Broker finalist shares his thoughts as a Rising Star broker.

Risk & Insurance: What are some of the keys to your success as a commercial insurance broker?

Charlie Eisenbies: As a specialist in higher education, I consistently educate myself on the latest changes and complexities that affect these institutions and their risk profiles. By focusing on the unique challenges that my clients face, such as the evolving world of college athletics, I can identify the best solutions to meet their needs and best position them for success.

On a broader level, communication and maintaining strong relationships in the market is key. I am in constant communication with our clients as well as the top carriers, claims administrators and other market resources. I believe in a consistent approach to service, communication and education.

R&I: In the economic sectors you work in, what are some of the biggest challenges insureds face?

CE: Working with higher education institutions, specifically in college athlete accident insurance, I see challenges such as rising medical costs for athlete injuries, the resulting premium increases and the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics.

Medical cost inflation continues to rise at a significant rate, leading to higher claims and premiums. As brokers, we support our client institutions to offer their student-athletes the best coverage and care while mitigating premium increases. We work with clients to implement strategic loss-control measures, such as primary health insurance for their athletes or negotiated rates with local medical providers.

A lot has changed in college sports. Particularly for our NCAA clients, it can be challenging to understand how these changes impact student-athlete wellbeing and their insurance needs. Staying on the pulse of the latest regulation changes and league updates is an important role I play in many of my client relationships, which allows us to work collaboratively to identify the best approach to manage their needs.

R&I: If you could name one thing the commercial insurance industry could improve on, what would it be?

CE: In the college athletic accident and health market particularly, I believe a more value-driven and long-term approach is needed from all parties. We frequently see this coverage treated more like a commodity with underwriting based solely on claims experience and projections, rather than looking at the specifics of the individual institution’s program, and see the market often turn into a race to the lowest price.

At Gallagher we strive to bring extensive resources, benchmarking, market leverage, and expertise to best support our clients in navigating this market and balancing the best decisions for the short- and long-term health of their program. Our clients work with us to leverage our market relationships and understanding of their program to ensure the full story is told with all relevant details included in the underwriting process. We can then help our clients understand the options available to them each year with an eye to the future.

The end goal is always to support our clients so they can continue to cover their student-athletes as best as possible now and in the future.

R&I: Where do you find the most joy in your work?

As someone who is passionate about college athletics, I truly find joy in positioning our client institutions to succeed, including supporting their efforts to provide the best care and resources for their student-athletes. Whatever the challenges or changes may be, I enjoy finding solutions that help our clients solve their problems, navigate change, and plan for the future so student-athletes and college athletics can continue to thrive. &
