Patients with Aetna health insurance can keep seeing their Trinity Health caregivers at in-network prices in 2025 after the two sides reached an agreement in late December.

The same can’t be said for those with Humana coverage, as the Jan. 1 deadline came and went without a new agreement reached with the national faith-based health system .
Visiting an in-network provider comes with cost savings through your health insurance plan, while out-of-network visits can prove more costly.
Trinity Health announced a multi-year agreement with Aetna, a CVS Health company, on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Later that afternoon, the health system announced it would no longer be included in Humana’s network, which offers Medicare Advantage plans.

Trinity Health says it did everything within its power to protect access and remain in network with Humana during several months of discussions.
“This outcome is deeply disappointing,” reads a statement from Diane Benson, manager of internal communications and media relations for Trinity Health West Michigan.
“We urge patients to call Humana and tell them how important it is to reinstate their in-network access to Trinity Health and its providers.”
Humana has accused Trinity Health of making “significant financial demands that will drive up patient costs.” It says it has engaged in good-faith discussions and put forth proposals that would reimburse Trinity Health at “fair and reasonable rates.”
“Trinity is paid fairly for the services it provides, at rates that are commensurate with and in some cases higher than original, fee-for-service Medicare,” Humana wrote on its website.

The previous agreement between the two parties expired at the end of 2024. Without a new deal, more than 100,000 members nationwide will need to switch to new doctors/specialists to maintain in-network benefits.
Patients already in the hospital when the current contract expires will continue to be covered at in-network rates through the end of their inpatient stay, Trinity Health said.
Patients who are pregnant or are receiving ongoing treatment may still be able to maintain their in-network coverage, according to Trinity Health. For more information, they can call the number on the back of their insurance card.
In the event of a medical emergency, Trinity said patients will always have in-network access to its emergency rooms until the patient is stable.
Humana said it remains open to renewing a contract if it’s “fair for both sides.”
