HARVEY, Ill. (CBS) — In south suburban Thornton Township on Monday night, two trustees skipped a special board meeting to approve township insurance coverage.
The trustees, Christopher Gonzalez and Carmen Carlisle, say Supervisor Tiffany Henyard needs to conduct herself more professionally and foster an environment of respect. They have repeatedly denied Henyard a quorum at township board meetings as a show of protest.
The trustees’ absence meant there were not enough board members to vote on paying the insurance bill.
The township board was not able to meet in its own building Monday night because of the unpaid insurance bill. The board had to meet in the Harvey City Council Chambers instead.
Henyard blames trustee absences for the lapse in insurance coverage in the first place.
“We cannot move forward with business, we cannot pay bills, we cannot do a lot of things if the board members do not show up,” she said.
Aside from the township building, Henyard said there is no longer insurance coverage of township vehicles or other buildings. She also warned that township services will have to come to a halt.
Henyard continues to face criticism of her spending as supervisor of Township and separately as mayor of Dolton.
She has also taken issue with being denied a spot on the ballot for reelection as Thornton Township supervisor.
