According to the California Department of Insurance, Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued a mandatory one-year moratorium on insurance non-renewals and cancellations.

This applies to homeowners in ZIP Codes affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County, based on the January 7 emergency declaration by Governor Gavin Newsom.
The moratorium ensures that homeowners in wildfire-impacted areas are protected, regardless of whether their property sustained damage.
Commissioner Lara stated: “I am using my moratorium powers to prevent insurance companies from canceling or non-renewing policies in wildfire-impacted areas, so people don’t face the added stress of finding new insurance during this horrific event.”
Supplemental notices and additional insurance protections
The Department of Insurance may issue supplemental bulletins to cover more ZIP Codes as wildfires continue in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Commissioner Lara also issued a Notice directing insurers to pause non-renewals or cancellations for properties near wildfires, even if they are outside the mandatory moratorium zones.

This six-month pause applies to non-renewals issued up to 90 days before the wildfires began.
Insurance support workshops for wildfire survivors
To assist wildfire survivors, the Department will host free insurance workshops on January 18-19 in Santa Monica and January 25-26 in Pasadena.
These events will provide guidance on claims processes and rebuilding resources.
Residents can schedule appointments with Department experts by calling 800-927-4357.
Additionally, Commissioner Lara highlighted that many homeowners and renters may have coverage for evacuation and relocation expenses under Additional Living Expenses (ALE) provisions.
Fraud prevention and health care access
The Department’s enforcement team is working to prevent fraudulent activities targeting wildfire survivors.
Commissioner Lara also directed insurers to maintain access to medically necessary health care services during the emergency.
Residents are encouraged to check the Department’s website to verify their ZIP Code’s moratorium status and ensure agents or adjusters have valid licenses.
