CAIRO – 30 December 2024: Healthcare reform initiatives have reshaped Egypt’s medical system, offering high-quality, free medical services. Over 15 healthcare programs serve 110 million Egyptians, focusing on holistic family care. The Ministry of Health and Population aims to achieve 100% health insurance coverage by 2030, up from the current 78%, with annual costs of LE10 billion.
The number of health insurance beneficiaries increased to 69 million in 2024, compared to 54 million in 2014. Additionally, 8.5 million individuals under the “Takaful and Karama” program receive services through 23 branches of the General Authority for Health Insurance, 36 hospitals, 367 clinics, 101 physical therapy centers, and 1,673 contracted hospitals.
Infrastructure development includes 16 partial and full renovation projects and the construction of major hospitals in the New Administrative Capital and Nasr City, accommodating 350 and 400 beds, respectively.
In the first phase of the Comprehensive Health Insurance System, implemented in six governorates, 5.4 million citizens are registered. Services provided include 49.7 million medical procedures, 30.1 million family medicine services, and 620,000 surgeries, with 90% satisfaction rates. This phase, encompassing 247 accredited facilities and two internationally certified hospitals, cost LE51.2 billion.
Second and Third Phases: Enhanced Healthcare Access
– Phase Two: Targets 12.8 million citizens in governorates like Damietta, Matrouh, Kafr El-Sheikh, North Sinai, and Minya, with a budget of LE120 billion. Plans include 65 hospitals (10,669 beds) and 516 primary care centers.
– Phase Three: Extends to governorates such as Beheira, Red Sea, Alexandria, Sohag, Assiut, and New Valley, while subsequent phases cover other regions until full implementation.Major Infrastructure Projects
The ministry is working on 20 healthcare infrastructure projects with 2,648 beds across 11 governorates, aiming for completion by early 2025. Key developments include building 10 prototype hospitals (200 beds each) in cities like Kafr El-Sheikh, New Minya, and Dakahlia, at a cost of LE 12.5 billion.
Specialized Medical Centers and Urban Healthcare Cities:
– Integrated Medical Cities: Projects like the Capital Medical City for Research and Training (4,223 beds) and Nile Medical City aim to revolutionize healthcare research, training, and specialized care.
– Dar Al-Salam Oncology Hospital: Expanded capacity includes 162 inpatient beds, advanced chemotherapy facilities, and a research center.
– Nile Specialized Children’s Hospital: Designed for 250–300 beds, based on available spaces and standards.
Recent initiatives target mental health and addiction recovery, integrating patients into society. Programs include early autism intervention, school mental health, and combating gaming addiction. Newly established mental health facilities, like the Sakina Mental Health Hospital in New Alamein City (950 beds, LE 6 billion), support this mission.
Efforts to upgrade 150 hospitals include adding services like open-heart surgery and cardiac catheterization, while increasing intensive care capacity with 123 new ICU beds, 46 incubators, and expanded pediatric care.
Improved availability of essential medical supplies includes 3,000 units for heart surgeries, 1,400 valve replacements, and 800 oxygenators for pediatric and adult cardiac procedures. The supply chain has significantly improved in recent months, ensuring consistent delivery of surgical threads, meshes, and cardiac surgery essentials.
Through comprehensive reform and strategic investments, Egypt’s healthcare system is advancing toward universal coverage, improved medical infrastructure, and sustainable care, ensuring a healthier future for all citizens.
