Security footage shows flooding at the Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten on Sept. 29, 2023.
ASBURY PARK — The Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten is closed for good.
A 2023 flood caused the Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten to be closed indefinitely.
Then came the first crucial blow to its demise when the German-inspired bar and restaurant missed out on Oktoberfest that year.
The next fatal hit was losing out on St Patrick’s Day in 2024 after the restaurant owners said they were unable to get insurance to cover the losses from the flooding.
The final blow arrived when the rent was increased, management said.
Oktoberfest for Biergarten is like Fourth of July or Memorial Day weekend for other bars, explained former general manager Nick Falco, who told the Asbury Park Press that the bar is “closed for good.”
“We were up for renewal of the lease starting next month. When we sat with (the landlord)…. he was going to increase almost three times what we were paying,” Falco said. “It would have come up to around $50,000-to-$60,000 in Asbury.”
He added “it is almost impossible” for them to pay that for rent.
The combined factors of the out-of-pocket cost to repair the flood damage, mixed with the increase in rent caused the owner to decide to close the doors on the Festhalle.
Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn said “unequivocally, the loss of the Biergarten has absolutely effected local business in a negative way on Cookman.
“Ancillary businesses, like you would go buy a book or buy some art then go have brunch and a beer at Biergarten,” Quinn conbtinued.

She said the two biggest hits to the downtown area have been the loss of Biergarten and the House of Independents, but “obviously house came back.”
How a storm led to a closing
More than 7 inches of rain fell in some areas of the Jersey Shore that day in late September 2023, with Asbury Park and Neptune dealing with over six inches of rain in a single day.
Wesley Lake, between Asbury Park to the north and Ocean Grove to the south, overflowed and flooded out businesses on Lake Avenue. There was excessive flooding along Fletcher Lake on the south side of Ocean Grove, and the Asbury Park Fire Department needed to rescue people from cars that became trapped in flood waters.
David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University, said Asbury Park and Neptune were the picture-perfect representation of just how bad the Jersey Shore was hit, as a photo of Wesley Lake flooding was front page on the state climate website’s September Monthly report.
Neither the restaurant owner nor the insurance company could be reached for comments.
