LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – It’s been over a week since a major winter storm impacted the state of Kentucky, and while many major roadways are entirely clear, some Kentuckians are still struggling under the weight of lingering snow and ice.

Reports of ice melting and falling from buildings and wires and sliding of cars have been popping up across the state, with some ice even falling from our WKYT station tower. One Lexington resident even had ice weigh down a tree that fell and damaged her vehicle sitting in her driveway.
“If ice or snow hits your car and damages your vehicle, your windshield, that sort of thing, and you have comprehensive insurance on your policy, then it’s going to cover that,” said Lexington insurance agent Renee Jackson.

Jackson says with all the active weather Kentucky has seen in the past few years, the state is seeing a spike in insurance rates. So, when it comes to filing a claim due to winter weather damage, she encourages people to communicate with their insurance agent;
“Just read your policy, see what your deductibles are, get estimates, and then make an educated decision,” Jackson said.
However, falling ice isn’t just a problem for stationary vehicles. Vehicles that accelerate with snow and ice still on the body of the car can see ice fly back and hit vehicles in their review.
New Hampshire and New Jersey are two of the 11 states where laws now require vehicles to be completely cleared of snow and ice before hitting the roads. Kentucky does not have that requirement.

“If a rock comes and hits your windshield and you have it replaced or repaired, it’s the same thing, a falling object coming towards your car and hitting it. So if you have comprehensive coverage, you should have coverage on your policy,” Jackson explained. “As a homeowner, you want to clear your property as best you can. Start a few minutes early, clean your vehicle fully, and make sure you are protecting other passengers on the road.”
While there is not legislation in the state of Kentucky requiring drivers to clear their vehicles, citations can be given for obstructed views and careless driving due to snow and ice causing a risk to fellow drivers.
