The new year is a time for new beginnings in western North Carolina.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey emphasized that message on Wednesday as he was sworn into office.

“I think you’re going to see the state get serious,” Causey said. “But these folks can’t wait forever for help.”

Wednesday’s oath marked the start of Causey’s third term in the position. Causey has held the role since 2017.

This year, however, he faces new challenges. Specifically, helping the western part of the state continue to recover after the devastation of Helene.

“[A] significant number of these homeowners had private driveways and private bridges that were washed away. They have no resources to replace those,” Causey explained. “So, what you have is people that are having to – literally – hike through rough terrain just to get back and forth from their house.”

Although help has come in some forms, Causey knows it’s not enough.

“They’ve gotten a lot of help when it comes to food and water and clothing items and things like that, but you still have people living in tents,” he said.

After being sworn in he told ABC45 that his focus for the upcoming year is to use his role as insurance commissioner to get them the help they need.

“We need to do more of getting replacement housing and structures and finding ways to streamline our building inspections,” Causey said.

While also working across the state to ensure those communities come back better than ever.

“We all need to work together as agency heads to do everything possible to make sure that Western North Carolina comes back strong,” Causey stated.

Western North Carolina might be a priority for his team, but as a lifelong North Carolinian, Causey wants people to know he works for everyone. His goal is to always keep people protected.

“I love the job that I do, I enjoy helping people – that’s the best part of it,” Causey said with a smile.
